BRAVE Festival is on Saturday 19th and Sunday 18th October. It is in Central Bradford at the Bradford Arts Centre St Peter's House, 1 Forster Ct, Bradford BD1 4TY (This was formerly called Kala Sangam). This is a 10 minute walk from Forster Square Rail station or Bradford Interchange. There are also many bus stops that are closer than this. If you are driving, htere is no parking at the Bradford Arts Centre.There is limited on street parking, but the Broadway Shopping Centre (BD1 1JR) is £6 to park for up to 10 hours. If you exit the Broadway Shopping Centre between where Superdry and Marks and Spences used to be, teh Bradford Arts Centre is directly across the road.
Bradford Arts Centre is highly accessible, with step-free entrances on both sides of the building, lift access to all floors, and multiple accessible and Changing Places toilets. The venue also has dedicated wheelchair spaces and is committed to accessibility through its design and the services it provides.
The workshops and performances are Give What Your Decide. This means that when you book your tickets, you don’t have to pay anything. When you come to BRAVE Festival, you can choose to donate however much you would like to by cash or card. We suggest a donation of £2-£5 per workshop/perfomance. Anything you donate, will help us to make BRAVE Festival sustainable. If you are unable to donate anything towards the festival, that is absolutely fine. Money is not a barrier to BRAVE Festival and everyone is welcome.
Wear comfortable clothing and trainers for the dance workshops, bring wellies to the Gumboot workshop if possible.
All of our workshops at BRAVE Festival are for both adults and children. We welcome adults who come by themselves, with their friends or their families. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Most of our workshops are suitable for families with children aged 5 and over, but some are suitable for younger or older children as well. Please check each workshop for details. Performances are suitable for all ages.
Yes! BRAVE Festival is all about trying something new. It is a new and fun way to experience Black History Month. BRAVE Festival is all about being… BRAVE! So yes, you are welcome.
The workshops are an open level. This means that each Workshop Facilitator will give you variations so that both beginners and more advanced dancers will be accommodated.
We welcome all ages to BRAVE Festival and positively encourage families to take part together. All workshops are suitable for adults and children, but adults must stay with children under 16 at all times. Please check each individual workshop for minimum age details.
We want BRAVE Festival to be as accessible as possible. The minimum age is guidance for the age we feel will be able to fully participate in the workshop. If your child is younger than this, they may struggle to stay focused during the workshop. If you have a young baby or toddler, you may be able to take part in workshops with them in a baby sling.
The activities most suitable for adults and young people with physical and learning disabilities are the “Jamaican Dancehall Workshop" Sat 4pm, "Caribbean Carnival Dance Party” Sat 5pm, "Gumboot Dance" Sun 1pm, "African Dance" Sun 5pm. All of the performances on both days and the drop-in Carnival costume making and steel pan on the Sunday and the drop-in African Painting and African Drumming on the Sunday.
No you don't need a parter for any of the workshops, if there is partner work, we will pair you up!
Most of the events at BRAVE Festival are ticketed, so we recomend that you book tickets in advance as many of them get sold out. We will only be able to let you in to a ticketed workshop if there are spaces on the day. However, there are also drop-in workshops that you do not need to book in advnace such as Steel Pan and Caribbean Carnival Costume making on the Saturday, that donlt need to be booked and on the Sunday we have African Drumming and African Art WOrkshops all day. Graffiti art workshops on the Saturday will need to be booked on the day.
Yes there will be a selection of food and goods stalls, bring cash and cards to pay for them
Everyone is welcome at BRAVE Festival!! We believe that Black History part of everybody's history, so it is only right that everybody learns about it, so all are welcome!
